New Patents from Sony Indicate New VR Controllers in the works

VR is a slowly growing market that many companies are capitalizing on in hopes of attracting consumers for a brand new entertainment experience. Companies ranging from Google to Facebook to Samsung to Sony and more are all working on different forms of experiences to revolutionize entertainment, much similar to what to the original TV sets did when they came out.

However the technology is still relatively young and has ways to improve, not to mention also be cost effective for people to pick up on.

There are two main components of VR, the headset, and the controllers. Devices such as Google Cardboard don’t require controllers and base movements off motion, but more higher end devices like HTC Vive come bundled with two.

Sony’s path into VR led them to release the PSVR last year, a headset that can be connected to a PS4 and produce virtual reality experience based in video games. But, the accessory didn’t have unique controllers to go along with it, it relied on PS MOVE controllers, which came out eight years ago.

It seems though two patens have been discovered by Sony that show that the company is working on new controllers for VR.

The first patent shows a device which looks similar to a PS MOVE controller or even a Wii Nunchuck. It has an analogy stick on the front, buttons surrounding the analog stick, and a trigger button where the index finger would lay. However the innovation is in the grip. The grip, where the player will be holding the controller, will be able to expand and compress to bring a sense of immersion. It is unlike any other controller on the market, and will provide a unique sense of vibration feedback.

The second patent deals with the ability to track a user’s finger using the head mounted display, something that the PSVR cannot do currently.

It is unclear when these devices are coming out from Sony, if they are even working on it, but it seems Sony is investing lots of resources in what seems to be second generation of VR.
